His Holy Name

Almighty God, your blessed Son fulfilled the covenant of circumcision for our sake, and was given the Name that is above every name: Give us grace faithfully to bear his Name, and to worship him with pure hearts according to the New Covenant; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

I had a college friend whose mother named her while watching the Micky Mouse Club; I’m sure she’s not the only one to have been named that way. But, in the Bible, names have tremendous importance; often, chosen in light of some spiritual or family event. Proverbs says, “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold” (22:1), and Ecclesiastes says, “A good name is better than fine perfume” (7:1). Biblically, one’s name tended to say a lot about that person as names distinguish individual identity (Exodus 2:10), describe personal characteristics (Acts 9:36), and convey spiritual destiny (Matthew 1:23).

Because names mean something, God’s Holy Name reveals His nature, character, and conduct. In other words, it communicates who he is and how he works in our lives. The Scriptures for this week remind us that God’s Holy Name is mighty, sovereign, and covenantal. His Holy Name is personal and powerful, therefore worthy of honor and reverence. As the mighty and sovereign Lord, nothing is impossible for him! As the personal, covenantal Lord, He graciously provides everything we need!

Because we know that God’s Word is alive and active (Hebrews 4:12), we know that the Lord is the Shepherd of everyone who calls on his Holy Name!
