People of the Word.
We are people of the Word.
“There is no other book like the written Word of God for showing [us] the way to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another — showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way. Through the Word, we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.” (2 Timothy 3:16, MSG)
With this enduring declaration in mind, we must make studying Holy Scripture a priority. Learning Scripture requires hearing and listening to its message; faith depends on them because “faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.” (Romans 10:17) Therefore, in correspondence to this collect, we pray: God stir our desire to read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest your Word.
And because we are people of Scripture, we hold on to the hope of eternal life promised to those who believe. The New Testament testifies to our Lord Jesus Christ’s resurrection, and his resurrection is all the evidence we need to conclude that death does not hold the final word over us (1 Corinthians 15; 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17). With this immovable faith, we wait, even long, for the archangel’s trumpet and the Lord’s call.
May we press into God’s Holy Word, as the angels’ message of “peace on earth, goodwill to men” rings throughout this Advent season.
