ISAIAH 40:28b-31

The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth.
He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding.
He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.
Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion.
But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.

Sometimes we are tempted to think that our struggles are hidden from God. On the one hand, we can believe they go unnoticed by him; or on the other hand, that he completely passes over our needs and concerns. These verses assure us that God does notice and step in to support the weak and strengthen the powerless. The Lord, the Creator of the earth, is the everlasting God who never grows weary. He perfectly understands his people’s needs.

Isaiah’s words encourage us to trust the Lord, especially when things are crazy and difficult because those “who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

The biblical word “wait” is proactive. Rather than painting the picture of a clock-watcher or thumb-twiddler, it describes the person who waits with expectation and hope. With that understanding in mind, the Lord invites us to trust him. To underscore this invitation, he gives four promises to those who trust him.

  • Because God is the Creator and Overseer of the whole earth, we can trust him to oversee and control everything that goes on in our lives.
  • Because God never faints or becomes weary, we can trust him to be available when we need help.
  • Because God never becomes weary, we can trust him to strengthen us when we become tired and weak.
  • Because God strengthens those who wait on him, we can trust him to fill our tank with energy and vigor.
