Success! Do you know anyone who does not like success? There seems to be an overwhelming desire to succeed woven into every fiber of human DNA. We strive for it in every field of life. Vince Lombardi said success (winning) is the only thing that matters in life (or football).
What’s more, God wants us to succeed. Deuteronomy 15:10 says, “the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to.” His success sets us high above all the nations on earth, includes blessings that come to us in the city and the country, and makes us the head and not the tail (Deuteronomy 28:1–3, 13). Furthermore, God does not stop with your success; he wants your children to succeed, too. In Psalm 112, the Lord declares that your “children will be successful everywhere” (1–2, NLT).
These promises indulge the heart, don’t they? They cause us to swell with confidence and brim with hope.
But success and wealth are not free; they come at a price, but it might not be the price you think. The Lord does not demand more hard work, more long hours, or more ingenious thinking to achieve his success. His success is not obtained by more sweat of our brow but rather from the obedience of the heart.
Prosperity, blessing, and success come to those who obey him and carefully follow all his commands. Those who diligently walk by his Word will always be on top and never at the bottom, and the joy of the Lord will chase after them (Deuteronomy 28:1–2, 13). Now that is the success we can trust!
